Two bills that will enhance good governance and promote public safety in Lagos state, south west Nigeria, have been signed into law by Governor Babatunde Fashola.

The two laws are the Audit Commission Law and the Lagos Safety Commission Law aimed at saving lives and properties.

Deepening democracy

At the signing ceremony at the Lagos Government House, Ikeja, Governor Babatunde Fashola said that the two laws demonstrate the administration’s commitments to deepening democracy.

According to the Governor, “I will have no difficulty given accent to the bills. First because as you pointed out they are establishment bills, they were initiated by the executive arm, but perhaps more importantly because they aid good governance.”

The laws

Governor Fashola said:”The Audit law is the first institutionalization and recognition the professional nature of Audit work. By this law, we intend to provide a framework for the expressional capacity of auditors in the state public service. This is consistent with global trends for transparency and accountability. In the utilization of public money and time, it is our belief that the people of Lagos will be better served by this law”.

The second bill signed into law establishes the Lagos safety commission. Its main objective is to promote safety in public and private places as well as reduce risk associated with daily human activities. The commission will also provide policy maker strategies in averting risk, drawing the public attention to those risks and ensuring that steps are taking to correct them.

“We all attend parties, we go to night clubs, some night clubs have only one door and you will find out that when there is fire outbreak, which can happened in any electrically wired up house, escape and recovery is extremely hazardous. We are building tank farms near residential buildings. These are risk evaluation that will be the responsibility of the safety commissioner. Where those things have been done wrongly, to evaluate the risk and set up adaptive and corrective measures, through which we can ensure that in the event of accident, the damage and loss will be mitigated to the barest minimum”, the Governor explained.

Governor Fashola also called on the people of the state to collaborate and support government in the implementation of the law. The signing of the two bills into law brings to a total five of such laws that has been enacted since May 29, 2011, when the Governor commenced his second term of four years after the April Elections.
