Four States Benefit From DFID Sanitation Project

Bauchi, Benue, Jigawa and Katsina states in Northern Nigeria , have been selected to benefit from a five million pounds DFID Sanitation, Hygiene and Water Project (SHAWN) project, for four years.

Mallam Garba Magaji, Programme Manager, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) said three local government areas of Bauchi, namely Dass, Warji and Gamawa had been selected for the implementation of the project.

According to Magaji, the criteria for selecting the LGAs were based on the information and the outcome of a study submitted by a committee inaugurated for the purpose.

He said the agency was currently conducting a baseline data workshop for its staff as part of capacity building for the project.

''The project aims at 100 per cent water and sanitation coverage in the selected LGAs by 2014, in which Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) will be among the component,'' he said.

Magaji said that the state would replicate the SHAWN project in all its LGAs.

He said RUWASA had developed Water and Sanitation (WASH) Policy and was collaborating with relevant agencies to help in the implementation of its programmes.
