Abiodun Ozurumba, Enugu

The Akanu Ibiam airport in Enugu state, eastern Nigeria has re-opened on Thursday, to receive domestic and international flights, after undergoing repairs and upgrading.

The airport, which has been under reconstruction for about one year, recorded its first flight of a domestic flight from Abuja by an Arik airliner, signifying the successful completion of the upgrade.

Enugu state governor, Sullivan Chime, Aviation Minister, Mrs Fidelia Njeze, the Director General of Federal Airport Authority Nigeria , Mr. Dubem Onyia, a former minister of state for foreign affairs and other top government officials landed aboard the plane.

Governor Sullivan Chime said the airport reopening is significant for the people of Enugu state who would no longer need to travel for three hours by road to the nearest Owerri airport to board a plane to their destinations.

The newly upgraded Akanu Ibiam International airport is to be commissioned on Friday by President Goodluck Jonathan.
