INEC begins distribution of result sheets

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has started the distribution of result sheets for Saturday's National Assembly elections to the various local government areas.

Dispatches

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu State, Mr Josiah Uwazuruonye, while acknowledging the receipt of result sheets in Enugu, Eastern Nigeria, said that the commission decided to commence the exercise early so as to avoid late dispatch of material to polling centres.

He gave the assurance that the electoral commission would take care of situations arising from eligible candidates not having their names on the INEC list.

The INEC Office in Kaduna State, North-central Nigeria, also confirmed that it had received all the of result sheets allocated to the State for the National Assembly election.

The commission said it had replenished the electoral materials used in the botched April 2 National Assembly poll.

The INEC Administrative Secretary, Alhaji Musa Adamu, told newsmen in Kaduna that all the sensitive and non-sensitive materials had been distributed to all the 23 local government areas in Kaduna State.

He said that all the ad hoc and regular staff of the commission had been directed to collect the materials and report at their polling centres on schedule.

He re-assured the electorate of a free, fair, credible and acceptable poll, saying ``we must get it right this time''.

Also in Lagos State, south-west Nigeria, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Adekunle Ogunmola said that materials had been received and that dispatch had commenced.

He noted that the strategy was adopted to ensure that materials were at the polling stations as early as possible.

Patriotic enthusiasm

Uwazuruonye therefore, urged all electorates to come out en-masse to vote for candidates of their choice.

Noting that the postponement could have in no doubt dampened the enthusiasm of many Nigerians, he implored the people to be patient and demonstrate the zeal to choose the people that will govern them.

Call for peace

Meanwhile students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) Club at the Junior Secondary School, Garki, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, staged a peaceful street walk in Abuja on Friday to clamour for peace at the forthcoming elections.

The Principal of the school, Mrs Adebisi Badmus, told the reporters that the club embarked on the sensitisation rally to enlighten the nation on the need for peace at the elections.

Mrs. Badmus used the occasion to urge Nigerians to embrace peace before, during and after the election period, stressing the need for unity.

The president of the club, Miss Flourish Wasa, a student of JSS Area 11, said that the campaign was important because it could prevent electoral violence.

The SAGE club is an international group involving about a 150 countries. The club takes children through different trainings on how to be self-reliant after their education.
