Voting in Presidential Election Peaceful in Delta State By Williams Osewezina, Asaba
The people of Asaba, the capital of Delta State, in southern Nigeria, turned out in their numbers to cast their ballot in Saturday’s presidential election.
Most of the voters, who spoke with VON, expressed satisfaction at the conduct of the election.
Mr. James Nwokolo, who voted in Ward 8 in Oshimili North Local Government Area, painted a picture of the orderliness of the electorate during the accreditation and subsequent voting.
He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for its commitment to a free, fair and credible election.
Mr.Nwokolo also said that the electorate had shown a sign of commitment by coming out en-masse to exercise their voting rights:
“The one of last time was very crowded. They never started on time, so people were reluctant to vote. But today, they started on time. Everybody devoted his or her time to vote for a credible president”, he said.
Nwokolo urged all Nigerians to remain orderly in the next elections as the elections will determine the next level for the country.
In Obulu Okiti, Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state, one of the areas where the parliamentary election was not held on April 9, a Senior Special Assistant to the President on presidential matters, Mr. Clement Ofuani, affirmed that polling in the area had been peaceful:
“Election is going very smoothly; going according to the prescriptions of the electoral act. There is no problem whatsoever. Security is okay, there is no threat whatsoever to law and order. Everything is fine”, Mr Ofuani said.
He commended INEC for the conduct of the elections and urged the commission to build on the success that has been achieved so far.
