Government orders closure of land borders
The Nigerian government has directed the closure of all land borders from noon on Friday to 6:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, to regulate movement as the general elections draw near.
The Minister of Interior, Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho, said this on Thursday, in abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Iheanacho said that the measure was to ensure a peaceful and hitch free conduct of the National Assembly elections, taking place on Saturday.
Nationwide restrictions
He also said that vehicular movements have been restricted nationwide from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. local time on the Election Day, Saturday, 2 April, 2011.
The minister said that only INEC vehicles, security operatives, specially assigned for election duties as well as those on essential and emergency duties, would be allowed to ply the roads.
