Jonathan urged to sign Climate Change Commission bill

Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan has been urged to sign the Climate Change Commission bill into law before the expiration of the present administration.
The appeal was made by stakeholders at a press conference organized by the National Climate Action Network in Abuja.
Speaking at the conference, Chairman, Senate committee on Environment, Senator Grace Bent, who described the environment as a catalyst for development, said the signing of the bill by the President would save the nation from what she called environmental dilemmas.
Her counterpart at the House of Representative, Mr. Ezuiche Ubani, while also appealing to President Jonathan to sign the bill, noted that it will encourage other initiatives and policies being pursued on climate change.
The bill
The Climate Change Commission bill which is the first of its kind in Africa was passed by the National Assembly in December 2010 to coordinate Nigeria’s response to the growing disasters caused by climate change.
