Canadian Firm Signs $1.2m Transport Pact With Cross River

The Cross River State Government has signed a $1.2 million Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a Canadian firm, Canadian Pacific Consultant Services (CPCS Transcorp) for the development of a transportation master plan in the State.

Speaking shortly after the ceremony in Calabar, the State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke contended that the new robust master plan which is a critical component in the realization of its transformation agenda will help in repositioning the State as a model in the country and open up tremendous economic opportunities.

Becoming economically viable

He maintained that unless standard is set and investment made in the area of infrastructure that will translate into meaningful economic gains, the State will not realize its vision of becoming economically viable while stressing the need for a modern transportation system in the major cities across the State to expand and grow tourism to its fullest.

Senator Liyel Imoke pointed out that the 20 years plan when fully realized will tackle transportation challenges currently being experienced in the State especially in the Calabar Metropolis.

The Special Adviser on Transportation,  Barr. Edem Ekong averred that the integrated master plan, which is to be executed by an experienced firm was conceptualized based on the backdrop of a policy plan to put in place affordable, safety and efficient transportation system that will bring sanity and set standard in the sector.

Challenge

He stated that though the State has a bit of its share of traffic congestion occasioned by the growing transportation system, the firm which he described as being competent, will deliver on their mandate.

The Lead Consultant and Vice President CPCS, Mr. Glory Jonga, assured the State that with the collaboration of all the stakeholders, the firm is ready and capable of delivering the project as stipulated.

He noted that urbanization has remained a major challenge in the developing countries which must be adequately checked, adding that the step taken by the Cross River State Government to fashion out a road map for transportation was a step in the right direction.
