Normalcy returns to Northern states
Garba Lere, Kano
Normalcy and peace have returned to the northern states affected by violence over the results of the last Saturday’s April 16 presidential election in Nigeria.
Following the victory of Dr Goodluck Jonathan, the presidential candidate of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, misguided youth across some northern states embarked on protests and resorted to violence.
Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed and some innocent people were killed.
Currently, security agencies have restored peace in the ancient city of Kano, following several calls by community and religious leaders for peace and peaceful coexistence.
People are going about their normal businesses within and outside the city but banks and shops remain close in most of the major streets.
However, for fear of further attack, most of the army and police barracks are filled to capacity with people who fled their houses in the wake of disturbances.
The crisis in northern parts of Nigeria has received serious condemnation from traditional leaders, Islamic scholars, elites and statesmen.
