Commission Begins Accreditation Of Election Monitors

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has begun the Accreditation of local and foreign observers ahead of Nigeria 's 2011 general election.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega said in Lagos , at a forum organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, that the accreditation was based on a comprehensive guidelines and criterion compiled by the commission.

The Group urged Nigerians and the international community to support the efforts of INEC towards a credible election in 2011.

The forum, a policy dialogue series with Professor Attahiru Jega, has its theme as: Free and Fair Elections, Which Has the Greater Responsibility: Citizens or INEC?

Mr. Frank Nweke Jnr., the Director General of the Group said the body is also looking forward to organising interactive sessions with aspirants of various political parties.

The forum afforded Nigerians an opportunity to clarify some grey areas on the electoral Commission's election guidelines.

Suggestions were also offered to the commission on effective use of technology for monitoring elections and announcing results.
