Electoral Procedure Frustrates Attempt To Rig –INEC

Nigeria 's electoral commission, INEC, has given assurances to the government and people of Nigeria that any voter's card purchased for the purposes of rigging the scheduled April general election would be useless.

Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu said that the process of voters' accreditation nationwide was designed to frustrate any attempt to rig the elections.

He said that in spite of the fact that there would be no use of electronic device for accreditation processes as the law provided; holders of cards other than theirs would not be allowed to vote.

Impersonation
Idowu noted that the quality images captured during the voter registration was clear enough to detect any impersonation during the accreditation, which, he said, would be simultaneous across the country.

“Since there is no provision for electronic voting, people will take their voter's card to polling units where their names would be checked in the register to make sure they are correct.” Idowu said.

He urged INEC officials who would man the 120,000 polling units across the country to be vigilant and report cases of purchased cards to security agencies.

Caution on integrity
Idowu also cautioned INEC officials not to compromise their position of responsibility and urged them to ensure instructions are followed, in order to restore the integrity of the commission.
He said that the Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines would only be used for continuing the voter registration after the elections in April and not for voting “because the law does not permit electronic voting system''.

He said the electoral procedure was designed in a way that it would be too late for one to be accredited at a place and vote elsewhere.
