Nigerian Army Pledges Law And Order During April Polls Abiodun Ozurumba, Enugu
The Nigerian Army has assured the citizenry of its commitment to ensuring law and order in the forthcoming elections, scheduled for April.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika told newsmen in Enugu, while touring all the formations under South Eastern Nigerian Division, that his officers and men were well prepared to enforce the restrictions of movement during the elections.
Ihejirika said the Army would ensure that the hoodlums do not attack voting centres and that they would provide adequate give perimeter defence to collation centres as well as ensure total security of INEC officials and materials from one point to another.
He said that the Nigeria Army was still committed to the visions to transform into a force better able to deal with contemporary challenges. He identified the challenges as internal security issues in the South East, North West , and North Central, especially in Jos, the capital of Plateau state ).
According to the Chief off Army Staff, the Army will remain in Aba , Abia state as long as necessary even though cases of Kidnapping have grossly reduced.
He gave assurances that all efforts would be geared towards ridding the entire nation of crime.
Ihejirika called on the general public to eschew violence, co-operate with security agencies and report any plans to foment trouble immediately, so that the security agencies could take preventative actions to forestall crises.
