Senate Approves New Minimum Wage Obiora Ani, Abuja
The Senate has approved a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
At its plenary on Tuesday, the senators amended the minimum wage Act and unanimously endorsed a new minimum wage of 18,000 Naira for Nigerian workers.
The lawmakers proposed that the Constitution be altered to delist the minimum wage subject from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list, to permit both the federal and state governments the freedom to negotiate wage reviews with their workers separately.
They said the move would further strengthen fiscal federalism.
VON correspondent reports that the lawmakers were of the opinion that the existing minimum wage of Seven Thousand Five Hundred Naira was grossly inadequate for the Nigerian worker.
