Senate Approves More Days For Voters Registration
The National Assembly has approved additional thirty days for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to enable it register an estimated sixty five million eligible voters in Nigeria .
At the end of hours of interaction with the Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, the Senate resolved to concur with the House of Representatives' approval on Tuesday, granting thirty days for voters' registration.
Professor Jega had requested for additional one week for the commission to conclude ongoing registration of eligible voters for the general election in April, an exercise that has been trailed with complaints of inadequate logistics provision.
He said the commission needed additional 6.6 billion Naira and that about 28.5 million eligible voters have been registered in the first week of the exercise.
He said the commission had projected to register 44 million people by the initial time frame of 29 th of this month.
VON Senate correspondent, Obiora Ani, quotes the Senate President, Mr. David Mark any additional weeks for registration, would be at no extra cost to the government.
The Senate has proceeded on two weeks' plenary break.
