Anti graft agency arrests three ex-governors

Three former governors have been arrested over alleged fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

EFCC spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi, told reporters on Thursday in Abuja that those arrested were Mr Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State, Mr Alao Akala of Oyo State, both in south-west Nigeria and Mr Akwe Doma of  Nassarawa State, north central Nigeria.

Fraud allegations

Babafemi said that Daniel was arrested over a fraud of 58 billion Naira (about 387, million dollars), Alao-Akala, 25 billion (about 167 million dollars) and Doma, 18 billion (about 120 million dollars).

He further explained that Daniel and Akala were already on their way to Abuja while Doma was arrested in his residence in Abuja.

Babafemi said that the Commission would investigate the allegations and take necessary steps.

According to reports, Daniel, who had earlier attended a pan-Yoruba meeting at Ikenne, Ogun State, was whisked away by EFCC operatives on his return to his Sagamu residence.

The former governor, who was arrested at about 12.05 p.m local time, was said to have received the news of  the presence of  EFCC officials numbering about 10 at his residence while in Ikenne.

He was said to have hurriedly left the venue of the meeting to attend to the operatives.

The former governor’s media aide, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, confirmed that the arrest was informed by the avalanche of petitions the agency had received against Daniel.
