Jonathan Advocates One-Man, One-Vote Principle
Nigeria's President, Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to observe the one-man, one-vote principle peacefully in the April general elections.
Addressing a presidential rally of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday, in Yola, Adamawa State, North-west Nigeria, Jonathan said that youths in particular should ensure that after voting, figures were properly entered by election officials.
“You don't need to slap or kill anybody to do that. Don't kill because somebody wants to be the President, Governor or Senator,” Jonathan said.
He said his ticket with Namadi Sambo represented peace and unity of the country, adding that without peace, no country could develop.
He lauded the people of Adamawa for their peaceful coexistence, in spite of the diverse nature of the state, and assured them of his support if elected.
Areas of priority
Jonathan listed power, agriculture, job creation and roads as some of the areas of priority if the people elected him.
Vice President Namadi Sambo, who spoke on the long existing political relationship between the people of South-South and the north, said that their ticket symbolised continuity of the relationship.
Sambo spoke on government's plan to alleviate poverty and provide opportunity to the 9.5 million “almajiri'' population in the country to have both Quranic and western education.
