Referendum Is Best For
Niger Republic- Envoy
The
Ambassador of Niger Republic to Nigeria, Alhaji
Moussa Ibrahim, has said that referendum is the only
way out of his country’s political situation.
Alhaji Ibrahim said in an interview in Abuja, that
the people of Niger should be allowed to determine
who governed them and this could be done
conveniently through a referendum.
’’The best thing is to go to the people and ask them
if they want President Mamadou Tandja to continue in
office or not and this can be done through a
referendum,’’ he said.
The country has been engulfed in political unrest
triggered by the president’s desire for a third term
in office.

The Ambassador appealed to those
opposed to tenure elongation to do so peacefully
using the opportunity provided by the referendum
billed for August 4.
He described the country's constitution inherited
from the military as deficient, saying some
inconsistencies contained in the document were
responsible for the major socio-economic problems
plaguing the country.
The envoy said that there had been persistent calls
for the adoption of a full presidential system of
government in Niger as opposed to the
semi-presidential system with a prime minister.
President Tandja’s second five-year tenure ends in
December.
