Six Thousand Megawatts Electricity
Possible - Minister
The
Minister of Power, Mr. Lanre Babalola has given assurances that
6,000 megawatts of electricity is still realisable before the
end of the year.
Defending the ministry's 2010 budget of 153.2 billion Naira
before the Senate, the minister said that the ministry had not
jettisoned the target.
’’We are not only targeting 6,000 megawatts but we are looking
at sustainability. Without a doubt, a lot of money has gone into
the sector…The issue at hand is to deal with a whole gamut of
generation and distribution. To build a transmission station
will take a better part of three years without having major
issues,’’ he said.
He expressed the ministry's willingness to ensure that the 6,000
megawatts was realised before the Christmas celebration.
’’The 6,000 megawatts is still in focus all things being equal.
I want it to be ready before Christmas day,’’ he said.
At the meeting, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power,
Senator Nicholas Ugbane said there were conflicting reports
about the ability of the Nigerian government to meet the 6,000
megawatts of electricity generation.
