N20 Million Earmarked
For Mass Literacy
About
twenty million Naira is to be released for the advancement of
mass literacy, adult and non-formal education within the first
quarter of 2010.
The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy,
Adult and Non-Formal Education, Alhaji Jibrin Paiko, said in
Abuja in an interview, that the mass literacy programme fund
would enhance advocacy to local government chairmen, governors,
traditional rulers, opinion leaders and commissioners of
education in all states.
The executive secretary called on the state governments to
promptly pay facilitators of the mass literacy and adult
education programmes to ensure qualitative mass literacy
programme.
He also called on NGOs, stakeholders and individuals to
contribute to the development of mass literacy and non-formal
education.
Child beggars
Paiko expressed optimism that the integrated Koranic plan,
set up as part of the mass literacy programme would reduce the
menace of almajiris (children beggars), especially in northern
Nigeria.
According to him, the commission has already paid advocacy visit
to five states in the North-East Zone and intends to visit Borno
this year.
