Nepal Makes Landmark
Political Moves
The
UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) has welcomed the formation of a High
Level Political Mechanism (HLPM), a forum dedicated to
multi-party dialogue on peace process-related issues.
Top leaders of the major three political parties on Friday
formed the much-anticipated HLPM, under the leadership of Nepali
Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala.
In a statement by UNMIN Chief, Karin Landgren, the body said
that the establishment of the HLPM came at a time when consensus
among the parties was vital for securing the critical steps in
the process, timely drafting of the new constitution and taking
the peace process to a logical end.
The UN Security Council in its resolution 1879 of July 2009
encouraged renewed and sustained efforts to create a unified
approach among the political parties, including through such a
mechanism.
Expressing its readiness to assist the parties in achieving
their objective, the UNMIN hoped that the newly set up forum
will bring fresh momentum to the peace process.
