Ten states including the Federal Capital Territory are participating in the maiden two-day National Open Kickboxing Championships in Lagos.

An official of the Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria, Chimezie Asiegbu said the states are Ogun, Oyo, Delta, Niger and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

Others are Bayelsa, Edo, Nasarawa, Anambra and Lagos.

’’We are expecting more states to turn up as we want to use the championship to discover talents from the 36 states of the federation,’’ he said.

He said the competition would feature seven events – full contact, semi-contact, low kick, light contact, mixed martial art, K-One and musical forms.

’’This is the first time that different aspects of kickboxing will be featured at any national championships,…outstanding athletes from this competition will be selected and prepared for future international competitions,’’ he said.

A refresher course for referees, which began on Tuesday and ended on Wednesday, preceded the tournament.

The course was to acquaint the technical officials with the latest developments in the sport to enable impartial officiating at the championship.
