China Hosts Forum On Curbing Piracy
A
two-day international conference on maritime is
holding in China, to fashion out measures to protect
shipping in the Gulf of Aden from Somali pirates.
Representatives from Russia, Japan, India, the
European Union, and marine forces from other
countries, including NATO are attending the forum.
They are discussing how to evolve the implementation
of cooperative efforts to protect shipping in the
Gulf of Aden and the best formula for international
maritime safety cooperation.
China, in January joined international efforts to
police waters off Somalia, in a bid to fend off
pirate attacks.
The meeting comes nearly three weeks after a Chinese
coal-carrying vessel with twenty-five crew-members
was hijacked by Somali pirates in the north of the
Seychelles.
