Nigerian Government To Harness
Culture For Development
The
Nigerian Government has restated its commitment towards
harnessing the nation’s diverse culture to foster peace, unity
and attract foreign investment.
The Minister of State for
Information and Communication, Alhaji Dasuki Nakande stated this
at a cultural festival in Jos, the Plateau State capital, north
Central Nigeria.
Nakande who stressed the need for
the preservation of the nation’s diverse culture said the
Government’s policy on culture was to use it as a tool for
fostering unity, peace as well as to attract foreign investment
for the development of the country.
The Minister said the nation’s
rich culture was another gold mine that could fetch the country
billions of dollars in foreign exchange if properly harnessed.
He however, regretted that the
country’s cultural heritage was being eroded by the influx of
foreign culture, and expressed the hope that the Federal
Government’s policy on culture would check the cultural
imperialism.
The minister enjoined Nigerians,
especially parents, to join hands with the Federal Government in
developing the nation’s culture so that it could positively
contribute to the development strategy of the present
administration.
