ADB Suspends
Programmes In Guinea
The
African Development Bank (AfDB) has suspended its programmes in
Guinea, including its role in a mining project.
The bank's president, Donald Kaberuka said on Monday, that the
decision was taken because of political instability in the
country.
’’It is very, very important for Guinea, it is important for
West Africa, that Guinea returns to stability,’’ the AfDB
President said in an interview.
’’We are already beginning to do some key programmes there which
have had to be suspended and that is very regrettable ... It is
not we alone, because the conditions are not in place for us to
operate there,’’ he said.
He said one of the programmes affected was a commitment by the
bank to put $300 million into a mining project which involves
Rio Tinto and other firms. He did not specify which project.
’’This mining venture is not going forward and if it's not going
forward we cannot be part of the deal,’’ Kaberuka said.
