Anambra State
Governorship Polls Hailed
Nigeria’s
Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan says the successful
conduct of Anambra state governorship election last Saturday, is
a clear indication that Nigerians are determined to entrench
democracy and make it thrive.
The Vice President, in a congratulatory message to the winner,
Governor Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance,
commended the people of Anambra state, south east, for their
peaceful conduct.
He acknowledged the roles played by the Independent National
Electoral Commission, INEC, the Nigeria Police and other
security agencies towards ensuring that the polls were
successfully conducted.
About twenty five candidates from the more than thirty political
parties fielded in the polls.
The Vice President said the whole process was an indication that
the electoral reforms of the present government were beginning
to have an effect on the nation's political culture.
Citizens hail the victory
Anambra citizens have applauded the re-election of Governor
Peter Obi, describing his success as a victory for true and
sustainable democracy.
In an interview, many of them said that Mr. Obi’s victory had
signalled the end of the influence of political godfathers in
the state.
Chief Ikechukwu Obiora, Chairman of the Enugu Branch of the
Adazi-Nnukwu Development Union said: ’’with Obi’s victory,
the state will not only experience peace but unequalled
development in all sectors, as has been initiated.’’
He said that the emergence of the people’s choice, which was
respected by INEC, marked the end of political bickering and
backwardness in the state.
Also, Chief Aloysius Atuegbu, a businessman, said that Obi’s
victory had proved that ‘Anambra is truly the light of the
nation’.
He pointed out that although there were some hitches in the
conduct of the election, the general turnout of voters showed
the new level of political awareness. He therefore called on
INEC to ensure that some of the problems encountered during the
election were corrected before the 2011 general elections.
