West
Africa Floods Affect 350,000
The
United Nations has expressed concern about the
gravity of floods that have affected about 350,000
people and killed at least 32 in West Africa since
June.
Burkina Faso is the country worst hit, with 150,000
citizens displaced from their homes and at least
seven dead.
International
Assistance
The
country's Prime Minister, Tertius Zongo has called
for US$150 million in international assistance to
drain flooded cities and repair structural damage.
There are also concerns about the extent of ruined
crops and the spread of diseases like malaria and
diarrhoea, because of the high water level. Similar
floods in 2007 affected 800,000 people and left 300
dead in West Africa.
