First
Lady Gives Assurances On Nuclear Activities
Uche Aneke, Vienna
The
Nigerian’s First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua has
given assurance that the country’s nuclear
activities are purely for peaceful purposes and are
under safeguards.
Hajia Turai gave this assurance when she met with
the President of the International Atomic Energy
Conference Mahmud El-Baradie in Vienna, Austria.
Nigeria’s Commitment
She said that Nigeria’s commitment to the basic
tenets of the Non- proliferation Treaty was
unquestionable having signed along with other
African countries the African Nuclear-weapon-free
zone Treaty known as the Treaty of Pelindaba.
According to the First Lady, Nigeria signed the
Treaty in April 1996 and deposited the instruments
with Burundi becoming the 28th nation to deposit its
instrument of ratification in June.
She stated that this was clearly demonstrative of
Africa's commitment to nuclear application and
techniques for peaceful purposes and the continent's
economic development and regeneration.
