DR
Congo Resolves To Support Zimbabwean Unity
Government
Tony Ekata, South Africa
The
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), says it is ready
to take over efforts to resolve tensions in
Zimbabwe’s unity government.
DRC President, Joseph Kabila, made this known while
taking over the Chairmanship of the Southern Africa
Development Community (SADEC) from South African
President, Jacob Zuma, at the start of SADEC summit
in the DRC capital, Kinshasa.
Doubts
There are questions whether Kabila will be an
impartial mediator between the Zanu PF and the MDC
who are partners in Zimbabwe’s unity government, as
Kabila is seen to be a close ally of President
Mugabe.
Assurances
However, the DRC Ambassador to South Africa, Bernard
Mpoko says the doubts are misplaced as there is a
SADEC agenda that Kabila would have to keep to.
He says Kabila would not introduce his personal
agenda but would be implementing the same agenda
that Zuma was implementing as the chairperson of the
regional body.
