Beijing Olympics:
Fasuba, Siasia Target Olympics Gold
Nigeria’s Under-23 national team coach, Samson
Siasia, says his focus is winning the Beijing
Olympic Games football event gold having been shut
out of the Super Eagles coaching job.
Siasia who came tops at the interview conducted by
the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) for the
Eagles coaching job may not clinch it following
feelers from the NFA. The football house, it was
learnt, has resolved to name Shuaibu Amodu as Super
Eagles coach.
Siasia said in an interview that his failure to
clinch the Super Eagles job would serve as his
motivation in winning the Olympics gold medal.
According to him, winning the gold in Beijing will
put him in a pole position for the Super Eagles job
in future, reiterating that he was not bothered
losing the Eagles job.
He said "I am not bothered about the Super Eagles
coaching job for now. My target is winning the gold
in Beijing. After winning it, then I will know where
to go next. I am sure by then I will be in a better
position to vie for the Eagles job," he said.
Meanwhile, Africa's 100m 9.84sec record holder,
Olusoji Fasuba, has said that his target at the
Beijing Olympic Games is winning the gold medal in
the dash event and possibly breaking the existing
world record.
Fasuba made this declaration in Lagos, South-western
Nigeria during the final of the second edition of
the U-18 athletics championship sponsored by soft
drink giants, Coca-Cola.
He said he has what it takes, in terms of
determination and talents to win the Beijing
Olympics 100m gold medals. He however noted that
funds should be released on time for adequate
preparation.
He said those athletes that win at the Olympics do
so because of adequate preparation, noting that what
separates him from others was funds to adequately
prepare for the Olympics. He said he has in
abundance talents and determinations, which are the
ingredients that athletes need to, win major events.
He said "I have competed with world class athletes,
the difference between us only exits in colour. When
it comes to talent and abilities, I think am up
there”.
On making the youths more responsive to athletics,
Fasuba said Coca-Cola has begun a good thing which
would benefit a lot of youths that kept their head
down to learn.
