Wife Of South African Security Chief Jailed

The wife of South African Minister for States Security, Sheryl Cwele and Frank Nabolisa, accused of drug trafficking have been convicted by the Pietermaritzburg High Court .

 They were also found guilty of recruiting a female courier now serving jail term in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Road to Jail

Sheryl Cwele was arrested in Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu Natal in February 2010 after she was caught with nine grams of cocaine and multiple Identities in her residence.

Mrs. Cwele and Frank Nabolisa, a Nigerian, were said to have hired a number of persons including two couriers who are now in jail in Brazil and Columbia respectively after confessing that they were couriers for the now convicted business partners.

When the case was brought to the limelight last year, members of the opposition demanded that the States Security Minister and husband of the accused Sheryl, Mr. Siyabonga Cwele  should quit his ministerial appointment.

The state’s plea to reopen the case against Nabolisa and Sheryl on Thursday was declined by the court because of what it termed as unfair step.

It noted that the prosecution had ample opportunity to call all its witnesses while the case was in hearing but failed to do so.
