Obama Urges Kenya To Cooperate With ICC

The US President Barack Obama, has urged members of Kenyan political class to co-operate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the trial of those accused of masterminding the 2006 election violence.

Obama advised Kenyans to reflect on the progress made and work towards reconciling their communities.

He advised the people not to hold communities responsible for the violence rather they should isolate individuals who perpetrated it and bring them to justice.

Obama said in a statement: ''The path ahead is not easy but I believe that the Kenyan people have resolved to reject those who would drag the country back into the past and rob them of their opportunities. Those found guilty will be held accountable for their crimes as individuals; no community should be singled out for being involved in the fightings” .

ICC Prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo on Wednesday named Uhuru Kenyatta, Francis Muthaura, Hussein Ali, William Ruto, Henry Kosgey and Joshua Arap-Sang as masterminds of post-election crisis.

About 1,133 people were reported to have died while 650,000 were displaced during the violence which followed the 2006 presidential election.
