Former African leaders appeal to AU on Libyan crisis
Thirty former African Heads of State and Government, as well as institutions, have sent an urgent appeal to the African Union on the situation in Libya.
The letter addressed to the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Jean Ping expressed deep concern over the current situation in Libya and its implications for that country and Africa as a whole.
They called for immediate dialogue as the only means to arrive at a durable solution to the conflict, and expressed full support for AU’s efforts, urging it to vigorously pursue the implementation of the Roadmap adopted by the Peace and Security Council, on 10 March 2011.
The former leaders also called on the international community to fully rally behind the African Union’s efforts.
Among those who signed the letter are; Former President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Former President of the Republic of Botswana, Sir Ketumile Masire, Former President of the Republic of Namibia, Sam Nujoma, Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, Former Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Former President of the Republic of Burundi, Pierre Buyoya, Former President of the Republic of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, among others.
