| International Delegation Supports Postponement Of Benin's Election
The African Union, the ECOWAS and the United Nations team, have expressed support for the postponement of Presidential election in Benin Republic.
This decision was taken after an assessment of the country's preparation for March 6 polls.
The team, however, said the postponement should be in line with the provision of the country's constitutions which says the president must be sworn-in by April 6 .
Resolutions
A statement issued by the AU Peace and Security Department in Addis Ababa said the team agreed with the postponement to allow the finalisation of procedures of distribution of voting materials.
It would also provide an opportunity to conclude measures by the country's electoral commission (CENA) to complete preparations at both regional and local levels.
The team said that the postponement would also help to provide room for appointment and training of all polling station agents.
The team appealed to the people and leaders of Benin to continue to demonstrate a high sense of responsibility, to preserve their value of tolerance and peace at this crucial moment of consolidating their democracy.
Credible election
It also encouraged the stakeholders to explore all possible avenues in line with the rule of law and the respect for the constitution, in order to create the best possible conditions for holding a peaceful and credible election.
According to the statement, the team expressed satisfaction with the progress made in implementing instruments to bring up-to-date electoral lists and other democratic principles of Benin republic.
