ECOWAS Signs Deal For Regional Border Project

 

The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS has signed contracts for the construction of joint border posts, to facilitate the free movement of goods and persons.

A statement by the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja , said construction of the three joint border posts would ensure effective policing by a combination of border security personnel.

The contract

The Commission said the 57 million Euros posts construction project is funded by the European Union.

The posts are to be located at Seme-Krake; which is the border between Benin and Nigeria , Noepe; between Ghana and Togo and Malanville, the border between Benin and Niger .

It is funded from the ninth European Development Fund, from a sixty three million grant.

Part of the fund will also go towards the development of railway infrastructure and capacity building.

The three posts are part of the seven originally envisaged for construction in the region, to address the delays associated with the processing of travellers and goods at the borders.
