South African President Congratulates Comoros Leader
Funke Atohengbe, South Africa
South Africa has congratulated and conveyed its well wishes to the newly re-elected Comoros President, Ikililou Dhoinine.
A statement by the office of President Jacob Zuma reiterated South Africa’s wish to strengthen its ties with Dhoinine's government.
It commended the people and government of Comoros for the steps taken in implementing a democratic transformation.
49 year old Dhoinine won the presidential elections held in December last year, with 61 percent.
The Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean has had a fractious history since independence from France in 1975, experiencing more than 20 coups or attempted coups.
Since 2001, the presidency of that country, which lies about 300 kilometres, off Africa's east coast, north of Madagascar, has rotated between the three islands of Moheli, Anjuan and Grande Comore.
