Chadian NGO calls for strike

A Non Governmental Organisation in Chad, the Chadian People’s organisation has called on Chadians to embark on a strike next month.
The Executive Chairman of the NGO, Yusuf Adam, said that the strike would send the signal that Chadians are not happy with Deby’s leadership.
He said: “staying off work is better than fighting with arms as the signal will be sent and received by the Chadian government.”
According to Mr Adam the strike will hold unless the President does something to reverse it.
Call for a road map
“The Chadian People’s Peace Organisation want the government to listen to the yearning of the masses and draw a road map that can be of great benefit to the common man,” Mr Adams said.
He pointed out that this call had been made in the last two decades with no response.
Mr Adam is optimistic that Chadians will not fight war again but called for indefinite strike from February 6.
The country, Chad
Chad, bordered by Niger, Libya, Sudan, Central African Republic, Cameroon, and Nigeria, has the population of over 11 million people scattered all over 100 different ethnic groups.
For over two decades the country has been ruled by Idriss Deby, a former Defence Minister and Head of the Patriotic Salvation Movement, who overthrew President Habré, suspended the constitution, and dissolved the legislature in 1990.
In 1994 a new constitution was drafted and an amnesty for political prisoners was declared. Idris Déby won multiparty elections in 1996 and was re-elected in 2001 and 2011.
