Ethiopia To Celebrate New Year On January 7

Christians in Ethiopia are to celebrate the New Year on January 7, which has already been declared a public holiday.

Already, churches, hotels, shops, parks and other public places have started to wear a new look in preparation for the celebration.

Unlike many countries of the world, where the New Year was celebrated last Saturday, Ethiopia observes its New Year differently.

Ethiopia has a separate national calendar which started in September 2010.

According to the Ethiopian calendar, which is seven years behind the Gregorian calendar, January 1, 2011 is equivalent to 23, Tahsas 2003.

Tahsas is the fourth month in the Ethiopian calendar.
