| South African Workers To Vote New Wage Offer
The COSATU union federation said South African striking workers would vote on an increased wage offer made by the government in order to end a nearly three-week-old strike.
The government increased its offer to 7.5 percent from 7 percent after being ordered back to dialogue by President Jacob Zuma, under growing political pressure over the stoppages.
The striking workers are demanding for 8.6 percent wage increase and a set housing allowance.
The strike had prevented treatment at hospitals, closed schools and harmed investor sentiment in the country.
Offer to be put to ballot
COSATU President, Sidumo Dlamini told newsmen on Tuesday that the offer will be discussed by members and they will ballot on whether or not to accept the new offer.
Union officials said a conclusion on whether to agree to the new offer was likely to come early on Wednesday.
COSATU Secretary-General Zwelinzima Vavi said the union would hold a one-day compassion strike on Thursday if nothing was done.
