| Nelson Mandela In Hospital As South Africa Tightens Security Funke Atohengbe
The ailing former South African President, Dr. Nelson Mandela spent the night at the Milpark Hospital with members of his family and newsmen keeping vigil.
Mandela was flown to the hospital in a helicopter from an unknown destination for a routine check up.
A number of dignitaries, particularly ANC chieftains spent long hours waiting to know the state of health of the ninety-two years old anti-apartheid icon.
Speaking on a television interview, the spokesman of the ruling African National Congress, Jackson Mtembu said if there was any problem beyond the ordinary, the news would have been out by now. He appealed to the public to show restraint in publicizing the news of the elder statesman's health.
Archbishop Bishop Desmond Tutu had told newsmen that Dr Mandela was frail on account of age but that he was in high spirit.
Meanwhile, South African President Jacob Zuma has sent his good wishes to Nelson Mandela.
A statement from the office of the President said South Africans should accord Mandela's family privacy, respect and dignity.
The statement said Dr Mandela was comfortable and well looked after.
President Zuma is attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and will later travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the African Union Summit.
The African National Congress Youth League, led by Julius Malema has also sent its well wishes and prayed for Mandela's quick recovery.
Security is tight in and around the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg where the 92 year old Dr Mandela was admitted.
