| South Africa Reviews Broadcasting Laws Funke Atohengbe, Pretoria
The South African Public Service Broadcasting Bill has been suspended from operations pending its review.
The Communications Minister, Mr. Roy Padayachie withdrawn the bill, saying more work needed to be done on the Act before it is represented to parliament.
Padayachie said the recent public hearings on the bill provided constructive feedback which can not be ignored.
The bill had called for, among other things, the scrapping of Television licenses and for an amendment to the Income Tax Act.
The Income Tax amendment would have resulted in the setting aside of one percent of personal income revenue for funding the struggling public broadcasting operations.
