AU Commission hoists new Libyan flag
The African Union Commission on Wednesday hoisted the new Libyan flag at its headquarters in Addis Ababa in further recognition of the National Transitional Council.
Reports say the flag, which was hoisted without any ceremony, was also placed inside the plenary hall of the Commission.
UN decision
The spokesman of the AU Chairperson, Mr Nouruddeen Mezni, told reporters that hoisting the new Libyan flag was in compliance with the decisions at the just concluded session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
“The AU has fully recognised the new government in Libya. The hoisting of the flag is an administrative way of accommodating Libya back to the AU as agreed during the just concluded UN General Assembly”, Mezni said.
AU Peace and Security Council
He added that the Commission was also ready to admit the new Libyan Permanent Representative to the AU as a member of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC).
According to him: “The AU is ready to admit the new Permanent Representative of Libya to the Commission and to take its membership of the PSC as soon as the new government is formed.’’
The Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan had on Friday, during his visit to AU Headquarters, urged the Commission to take immediate steps in recognising the TNC.
