Joint UN-ECOWAS-AU Team Monitors Niger Pre-Election

Ambassador Ramtane Lamamra of the African Union Commission for Peace and Security (PSC) is to lead a joint ECOWAS Commission, AU and UN delegation to Niger Republic to monitor arrangements for planned elections.

A statement in Addis Ababa by the Communication and Information unit of the PSC said other members of the delegation are: Mr. Jean Somda, the Deputy Chairperson of the ECOWAS Commission and Ambassador Said Djinnat, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa .

The visit is a follow-up to a decision taken by the three organisations to supervise the current transitional process toward the restoration of constitutional order in the country.

''It will provide an opportunity for the three organisations to assess the state of the ongoing preparation for the holding of presidential and legislative elections on January 31,'' the statement said.

''The election is expected to pave the way for the swearing-in of the elected president on April 6,'' it added.

The statement said the visit would be the second joint mission by the three organisations to Niger.
