The
Nigerian government in a deliberate police to check abandoned projects
syndrome in the country, is now to compel contractors to sign and

contractor that fails to execute the agreed contract after haven
collected a mobilization fee will be made to refund such money or face
prosecution. Such a contractor may even suffer both penalties.
The absence of such clause in existing
contractual agreements was identified as a major factor that has
resulted in the high rate of abandoned projects across the country.
Time Up
It was gathered that President Umaru
Yar’Adua decided to have the new clause inserted in the contractual
agreement after the Attorney-General of the Federation, and Minister of
Justice, Mr. Mike Aondoakaa drew his attention to the lapses in the
existing government agreement with contractors.
Aondoakaa recommended the insertion of
the new clause in the contractual agreement in order to avoid the
unsavoury effects of the identified lapses.
It has been discovered that the lapses in
the existing contractual agreement also served as loopholes through
which unscrupulous government officials misappropriate public funds.
The value of abandoned projects in the
country runs into trillions of naira, with road projects alone valued at
over N400bn.
