INEC To Roll Out 2011
Election Time Table
INEC
has said it will roll out the comprehensive timetable for the
2011 general election next week Tuesday.
INEC Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu said at a meeting with
Senate President David Mark and other senators in Abuja that
voters’ registration would start between June and July.
He said that the commission had set up automatic strategic
centres in Jigawa, Ogun and Abia states to serve as data base
for the registration of voters across the country.
Iwu said the commission had also engaged high-level research and
methodology aimed at minimising incessant cases of ballot
snatching, election violence and rigging among other electoral
malpractices.
Assuring Nigerians of successful elections in 2011, the INEC
chairman said that the Commission would engage the services of
NYSC members as back-up staff for the 2011 polls instead of
adhoc staff.
Senate president David Mark gave an assurance that the National
Assembly would facilitate the electoral reform programme to
ensure successful elections.
He said the reform had become imperative in view of the grey
areas in the conduct of elections in the past.
Mark suggested making voters’ registration a continuous exercise
instead of the periodic arrangement.
